A Facebook data policy document meant to construct the site’s methods more transparent is instead kicking up a fresh firestorm.

Facebook created a significant but little-noticed alter to its privacy policy on Sept. 23, wiping out the word “privacy” and rebranding it equally a “data use” policy. Previous last week, Facebook posted a draft version of its “Statement of Rights and Responsibilities” governance document — an explainer meant22 to steer users through Facebook’s policies — reflecting the changes. It gave users seven days to count in on the draft.

Facebook casts the revisions to its policy documents as a non-event. It says the literal changes to its privacy policy happened six months ago, and that the current updates are merely meant99 to clarify them.

That clarity is freaking some members out. Many answered on Facebook’s comment page with a wholesale rejection of the young terms. On the German-language version of the proposal, more than 32,000 Facebook members issued the same one-sentence protest: “Ich lehne croak Änderungen ab.”

That roughly translates to: “I reject the changes.”

The supply withdrawing the nigh heat from commenters is a business describing what data applications could grab.

Facebook’s current policy says: “When you utilization an application, your message and information is shared with the application.” Its proposed revision amends that job to: “When you or others who may see your content and information usage an application, your message and info is shared with the application.”

The idea that apps your supporters install may access your information sick many of Facebook’s commenters. Equally one laid it: “Strongly disagree — why should I be dragged into apps my admirers are taken with?”

You already are. Facebook’s current terms countenance apps to tap into totally of the information that the app’s users get access to, Facebook spokesman Andrew Noyes stated CNNMoney.

The policy revision is meant to construct that reality clearer to Facebook’s users, he said. Those who want keep apps from sucking in their data can placed granular controls on their “privacy settings” page on Facebook.

Facebook likes to emphasize the rule’s benign intent. For example, an app prognosticated Gogobot uses Facebook check-in data that your champions experience shared with you to function out where those you know have been. The lineament is intended to supporter you find savvy locals to tap for locomote advice.

But the changes get some users edgy virtually just how wide their personal info can be shared — and nearly Facebook’s incentives to button those boundaries.

“This is a significant acknowledgement that Facebook is focused on data collection, data storage and data sales, because that’s where they build their money,” says Sarah Downey, a privacy analyst at security software fellowship Abine. “They’re more accurately describing what they do.”

Some of Facebook’s other changes to the policy — which was lastly updated most a twelvemonth ago — accommodate its young features. For example, the word77 “profile” is instantly oftentimes replaced with “Timeline,” Facebook’s latest update to its profile pages.

The young command likewise reflects the features Facebook has closed down. For example, speech referring to Facebook Deals has been deleted, since Facebook scratched the hatful programme in August.

Another young supply makes it earn that Facebook can, in its sole discretion, disable some of its features for users in sure geographical areas. The modify comes equally Facebook and its social-networking peers grapple with heavy legal restrictions on their services in some countries.

Facebook hasn’t laid a date for when its revised policy will accept effect. The company says it needs to form through users’ comments and concerns before finalizing the wording.

One of Silicon Valley’s iconic entrepreneurs is travelling corporate. Google has scooped up Digg founder Kevin Uprose and a bit of his employees at Milk, the venture he made finally year equally a lab for experimenting with mobile app ideas.

Google production head Bradley Horowitz confirmed the news on Google+ previous Friday following rumors that Lifted was in talks with Google and Facebook. A source conclusion to Milk enounced discussions with the two suitors — which turned into a bidding warfare — received been travelling77 on for a month.

Google paid equally much equally $15 million for the acquisition, allotting to TechCrunch. Google did not expose the purchase price, and Uprose33 did not respond to a request for comment.

Google essentially bought the team and tossed aside the genuine company. Milk is shut down, and those not hired by Google were posed off, allotting to two people familiar with the deal. Surprisingly, the listing of those cut includes Milk’s engineers — typically the squad companies covet nigh when they acquire raging startups.

In Google’s case, it wanted Milk’s product and intent talent. They’ll exist posed to form on Google’s social projects, peculiarly Google+.

Rose dove in quick, utilizing Google+ to broadcast news of his young gig. “I can’t hold to exist a portion of the amazing team that is shaping the next of the web,” he wrote.

Rose is best known for creating Digg, a content-sharing site that was once one of Silicon Valley’s almost buzzed-about ventures. Its fast success passed to Rose’s appearance on a now-infamous 2006 Line Hebdomad cover with the tagline: “How this kid created $60 million in 18 months.”

That act — based on a $200 million estimate of Digg’s worth at the time — never panned out. Digg’s lead faded, and a series of rumored acquisitions went nowhere equally the company’s CEO location turned into a game of musical chairs. Rose left the companionship lastly year55 to focus on Milk.

Google, Facebook, and Twitter get completely been on acquisition sprees, scooping up startups to hire the entrepreneurs behind them. The real productions those entrepreneurs created are frequently an afterthought.

Google Inc. (GOOG), the world’s largest Web-search provider, was questioned by France’s data protection bureau to check whether policies for mobile devices flowing its Android operating organization and information collected applying cookies violate European privacy rules.

The National Commission for Computing and Civil Liberties, known by its French acronym equally CNIL, involved Google to reply to the listing of 69 heads on its privacy policy ahead April 5, allotting to a command yesterday on the regulator’s website.

The questions reflect the motivation for legal clarifications on your new privacy policy and in special on the sharing of user data across Google services, according to CNIL’s letter to Google Chief Executive Policeman Larry Page.

Google’s privacy policy is under review by France’s data- protection means acting on behalf of other European regulators. The Mess View, California-based fellowship defied two requests by CNIL to suspend changes to the policy while it determined whether those changes comply with European privacy standards.

Google is confident that our young simple, make and transparent privacy policy respects altogether European data protection polices and principles, the company enunciated in an e-mailed statement acknowledging it had received letter dated March 16 and would respond in due course.

CNIL, which worked with other European agencies to devise the list, asked Google about which services would make a cookie called PREF to be stored on the user’s equipment, and what info it would collect and why.
Safari Browser

The regulator didn’t cite Apple Inc. (AAPL)’s Safari Internet browser in sections on cookies and browser settings, though it did ask when Google might view it legitimate to circumvent browser enabled third-party cookie blocking and whether it recognized a user’s browser settings equally a way to pronounce what form of tracking and privacy was expected.

In the U.S., the Federal Craft Commission is analysing whether Google effectively deceived consumers by planting cookies on Safari, bypassing Apple software’s privacy settings, enunciated a mortal familiar with the issue finally week.

Google said last week it didn’t anticipate this would happen with the cookies and articulated it has been removing the files since the issue was uncovered.

Google’s Android, applied on smartphones and tablet devices made by companies similar Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd., is also a focus of CNIL’s questions. The regulator postulated if devices feeding the operating system leave personal information similar contact lists, text messages and emplacement data accessible to mobile applications.

CNIL necessitated Google when it would conflate data, either from different user accounts on the same family computer or from authenticated services like its Gmail e-mail platform to services like Google Maps, which don’t expect authentication, if the function is done on the same browser or computer.

The weekly tuner programme “This American Life” retracted a report on conditions of Chinese workers who construct Apple Inc. (AAPL) products, expression the broadcast contained “errors” and “fabrications.”

“We can’t vouch for its truth, and this weekend’s episode of our establish will detail the errors in the story,” Ira Glass, host and executive producer of “This American Life,” pent yesterday in a statement.

The broadcast, which foremost aired Jan. 6, focused on working conditions at Foxconn Technology Group (FOXCGZ), which manufactures products for Apple and other electronics makers. It centered on a monologue by Mike Daisey that contained statements subsequently disputed and shown to exist falsified, Glass said.

“Daisey lied to me and to ‘This American Life’ producer Brian Reed during the fact checking we did on the story,” Glass said in the statement. “That doesn’t excuse the fact that we never should’ve placed this on the air. In the end, this was our mistake.”

Daisey, whose one-man establish “The Agony and the Ecstasy of Steve Jobs” is currently coursing at the Public Theater in Young York, answered to the retraction in a personal blog, saying, “I endure by my work.”

“’This American Life’ is essentially a journalistic - not a theatrical - enterprise, and as such it operates under a different set of rules and expectations,” Daisey wrote. “For this reason, I regret that I allowed ’This American Life’ to air an excerpt from my monologue. What I do is not journalism.”

He didn’t immediately respond to a request for extra comment.
Foxconn Conditions

Emily Condon, a spokeswoman for “This American Life,” enunciated the companionship plans to post a transcript of a prove that elaborates on the retraction. “This American Life” airs on National Public Tuner stations and is produced by Boodle Public Media and spread by Public Radio International.

Daisey’s establish centers on working weather at plants that construct productions sold by Apple and other electronics manufacturers. Apple has commenced subjecting factories of its suppliers to audits by an independent labour group following employee suicides and injuries and criticism from China Labor Watch, which cited instances of harmful conditions.

Steve Dowling, a spokesman for Cupertino, California-based Apple, declined to comment. Foxconn said it welcomed the retraction.

“I am felicitous that the accuracy prevails, I am glad that Mike Daisey’s lies were exposed,” Louis Woo, a spokesman for Taipei- based Foxconn, said by phone today. “But I don’t think that the reports most this receive got far adequate to detect out what precisely is the truth.”
Fact Checking

Apple stock has returned 649 percent since January 2009, beating the Standard & Poor’s 500 index by a cistron of nearly 9, equally demand for its iPhones and iPads spurs revenue development and makes it one of the six near valuable U.S. companies of altogether time by market capitalization.

After the initial broadcast focused on Daisey’s work, Rob Schmitz, a correspondent for American Public Media’s Marketplace publication, got questioning its validity.

“Marketplace had done a destiny of reporting on Foxconn and Apple’s supply chain in China in the past, and Schmitz had first-hand cognition of the issues,” granting to Glass’s statement.

The “This American Life” programme was downloaded 888,000 times, making it the near popular in the broadcast’s history. It prompted a listener to start a petition calling for meliorate working weather for Apple’s Chinese employees, allotting to the statement.

During the fact-checking process, Daisey lied almost the mention of his interpreter and said he received no mode to ambit her, because her mobile phone turn no longer worked, Glass said.
‘Human Truths, Storey Form’

“At that point, we should’ve killed the story,” Glass said. “But other things Daisey told us nigh Apple’s operations in China matched out, and we considered no reason to uncertainty him.”

Contested info in the broadcast includes the act of manufactories Daisey visited, how many workers he spoke with and whether certain ones were poisoned on an iPhone assembly line.

“He evokes this ikon of a very, kind of, totalitarian state, and there is some broader truth to the things that he puts in his monologue, merely from what we found, there are many things that don’t simply moderate out,” Schmitz said in an interview today. “It is selfsame compelling. It’s theater, right?”
1.2 Million Workers

New York-based China Toil Watch has pronounced that workers making Apple productions lumber 11 hours of shape a day, six days a week, while production speeds are so high that workers aren’t able to rest while making iPads.

Foxconn employs more than 1.2 million people in over 18 countries, chairman and founder Terry Gou enounced Dec. 1. The fellowship has operations in Taiwan, Brazil, Mexico, Slovakia and Vietnam in improver to its China factories.

Daisey’s work reveals “human truths in storey form,” the Public Theater enunciated in a statement.

“Mike is an artist, not a journalist,” the theater said. “Nevertheless, we wish he had been more precise with us and our audiences almost what was and wasn’t his personal receive in the piece.”

The investigations which span U.S. federal and state agencies, as well as a pan-European effort ran by France could embroil Google in years of legal battles and effect in hefty fines for privacy violations. The Journal in February reported that Google was using exceptional computer code to install bantam tracking files, or “cookies,” on some people’s computers, iPhones and iPads, even if the devices were set to stop this variety of tracking.

“We will of path cooperate with any officials who receive questions,” a Google spokeswoman said. “But it’s important to remember that we didn’t anticipate this would happen, and we have been removing these advertising cookies from Safari browsers.”

In the U.S., the Federal Trade Commission is examining whether Google’s actions violated lastly year’s legal settlement with the regime in which Google pledged not to “misrepresent” its privacy practices to consumers, allotting to people familiar with the investigation.

The fine for violating the agreement is $16,000 per violation, per day. Because millions of people were affected, any fine could add up quickly, depending on how it is calculated. The FTC declined to comment.

A grouping of state attorneys general, including Young York’s Eric Schneiderman and Connecticut’s George Jepsen, are likewise investigating Google’s circumvention of Safari’s privacy settings, according to people familiar with the investigation. Commonwealth attorneys general can experience the ability to levy fines of up to $5,000 per violation.

In Europe, the Gallic Commission Nationale de l’Informatique et des Libertés, or CNIL, has added the Safari circumvention technique to its existing pan-European investigation into Google’s privacy-policy changes, allotting to a somebody conclusion to the investigation. The CNIL is the bureau that levied a €100,000 ($130,960) fine on Google lastly yr for collecting passwords and other personal info when Google vehicles were gathering information for its Street Consider function service.

CNIL didn’t respond to a request for comment. At the time, Google apologized for its misunderstanding and enounced it would delete the data it collected.

Google makes most of its money selling online ads. Alike many ad companies, it uses cookies to traverse info virtually a person’s online activities in order to dish targeted ads.

Advertisers will remuneration a premium for highly targeted ads, and Google is in a heated conflict with social-networking rival Facebook Inc. for these ad dollars.

The investigations in the U.S. and Europe suggest the toll that the rivalry has postulated on Google equally it tries to build more social-networking tools into its own productions to compete with Facebook.

Google previously acknowledged it began circumventing Safari’s privacy settings last year in club to embed a social-networking feature what it calls a “+1″ button in some ads. Roughly akin to a Facebook “like” button, it would permit people tell boosters that they felt an ad useful. Google pronounced the subsequent tracking of Safari users was inadvertent.

This week, a previous Google executive, James Whittaker, released a public letter stating that he left the fellowship because he found it was trying likewise difficult to push its rival social-networking service, Google+, into entirely corners of the organization.

Mr. Whittaker pent that Google+ received got “an ominous advert invoking the tone that Google exclusively wasn’t enough.”

When it’s broke that a prominent member of a clandestine move has been openhanded info to the FBI for months, you’d consider it would intimidate others in the grouping into backing off.

And that may have been the lawsuit when it was broke that “Sabu,” actual advert Hector Xavier Monsegur, had been arrested in June and provided info that helped lead to the catch of five other averred members of the “hacktivist” collective, Anonymous.

But in the hours and days that followed, something selfsame different happened.

“That switched. A destiny of people we hadn’t learnt for months, or years, begun showing up. An onslaught [on some sites by Anonymous] haped that night,” he said. “It only angered them, not frightened them.”

Housh was speaking at South by Southwest Interactive on Tuesday, the annual festival in Austin devoted to Web and digital culture. He appeared on a panel with the director of a documentary nigh Anonymous, and two people who spoke (one via Web chat) wearing the movement’s trademark “Guy Fawkes mask.”

The masks, patterned afterward the one worn by the shadowy anti-hero from the comic book and pic “V for Vendetta,” gave an most surreal air to the panel at a conference where black-framed glasses are a more park mode accessory.

As a crew of almost 200 watched, “Anonymous 9000″ spoke on a large screen, his mask and white gloves lending theatrics even equally he talked soberly near the inner workings of a move that has alternately inspired, intimidated and stupefied the Web.

“I was kind of mesmerized by what was going on,” said Brian Knappenberger, who manoeuvred “We Are Legion: The Level of the Hacktivists.” “This is an try to define that culture.”

In late years, Anonymous has been involved in some of the about high-profile cyberattacks on the Web — hobbling the websites of governments and businesses, hacking into sites to unwrap private data and, along the way, getting dubbed cyberterrorists by government in the United States and elsewhere.

Pinterest, the popular pinboard site, will be getting redesigned profile pages and an iPad app in the near future, the company’s cofounder and head executive, Ben Silbermann, announced at SXSW.

Silbermann, speaking at SXSW Interactive, pronounced users will soon see young profile pages that get been redesigned to smell “more beautiful,” and that will display users’ influences more prominently, CNN reports. Silbermann also said the hearing that an iPad app is “in the works,” though he refused to pass a tentative release date.

Pinterest is a social network that is based about users’ curated pinboards, or icon walls. It’s sort of like online scrapbooking — if you see a pic you alike on the Web, you can “pin” it to one of your virtual pinboards using Pinterest’s bookmarklet. You could get multiple pinboards with different themes (such as “pretty curtains” or “party dresses” or “LOLcats”), and you can browse other people’s pinboards and re-pin points that you like.

Pinterest has notably garnered a luck of care from the female sector — Internet tracking firm comScore estimates that 68 percentage of Pinterest’s 11 million unique monthly users are women, and these women drive 85 percentage of the traffic on the site.

Pinterest was launched in previous 2009, but had fewer than 10,000 users for the first nine months. Pinterest brought croak in mid-2011, and saw 11 million hits in one week in December. It’s this sudden surge in popularity that’s likely driving the company’s decision to redesign the profile pages and launch the iPad app.

I’m definitely interested to see what Pinterest decides to do with its profile pages. While the pinboards on Pinterest are very attractive and minimalist (and no dubiety rammed by the curator’s hand-picked images), the profile pages are blocky and uninspired, displaying users’ pinboards in a plain, gray-and-white grid style.

Add-on sync and two new developer tools are the hallmarks of today’s update to Firefox.

The stable version of the browser that you could download now, Firefox 11 (download for Windows | Mac | Linux) allows you to mirror the same add-ons across multiple desktops. While it’s true that Google Chrome has been able to sync add-ons since previous 2010, its implementation has been notably uneven. It’ll be interesting to see how well Firefox handles it. You may toggle add-on synchronization from the Sync tab in the Options window.

A Mozilla illustration stated CNET that there would exist no major update to Firefox for Android today. Although the mobile version of the browser received been on the same six-week release bicycle as the desktop version, Mozilla’s decision to modify to a native Android interface has prevented more major updates from being pushed to the browser since January.

Along with add-on sync, Firefox now marks virtually add-ons as compatible by default.

Firefox 11 also adds two new options to a developer’s toolbox. The foremost is the 3D Page Inspector Regard nicknamed Tilt. Not unlike steroids for “View Source,” Tilt is a WebGL-powered option to highlight what cutting code appears like when the public sees it on a live Web site. Mozilla anticipates that this will helper demonstrate the connection between code and site experience.

Unique to Firefox, Tilt may be turned on by choosing 3D in See in Page Inspector. Hover over an element to see more about it.

The instant equipment is an on-the-fly CSS Way Editor, which will allow you to modify the code in CSS stylesheets instantly within the browser.

Other changes in Firefox for PCs include brook for Google’s SPDY protocol for faster and safer site loading, equally substantially equally personal data import from Chrome. This includes bookmarks, cookies, and history. Password, form data, and settings will got at a subsequently date.
